Cleaning and descaling are different jobs
| Job | What it removes | Where it applies | Typical product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning | Coffee oils, grounds, milk residue and surface dirt | Baskets, outlets, jugs, trays, bins, brew groups and milk parts | Water, mild detergent or model-approved cleaner |
| Descaling | Mineral buildup | Internal water path, heater or boiler | Manufacturer-approved descaler at the stated dose |
A clean-looking drip tray says nothing about scale inside the heater; a completed descale does not remove rancid coffee oils from a filter holder. Treat the two routines separately.
What should I clean after every coffee?
- Discard the puck, grounds, paper filter or used capsule when safe and practical.
- Rinse the portafilter basket, reusable filter or removable brew parts the manual identifies.
- Wipe the coffee outlet and splashes from the tray area.
- After any milk drink, purge and wipe a steam wand or run the immediate milk-rinse routine, then handle carafes/tubes exactly as instructed.
- Empty standing milk; refrigerate a detachable carafe only if the manufacturer permits it and within its storage guidance.
Daily routine
- Switch off or enter the cleaning mode as instructed; allow hot parts to cool.
- Empty and rinse the drip tray, puck bin or capsule container before overflow or mould develops.
- Rinse the water tank with fresh water if the manual allows; never immerse the machine body.
- Clean the coffee outlet and milk path, then dry removable parts before refitting.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth, keeping water out of controls, vents, cable and plug.
Weekly or use-based deep cleaning
Frequency depends on drinks, milk use, oil buildup and the manual. Wash the filter holder, jug and approved removable parts; inspect outlet holes, tray floats and seals; and clean a removable brew group only by the specified method. Some brew groups must not receive detergent or lubricant.
| Part | What to do | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Portafilter/baskets | Rinse after use; use approved cleaner when oils persist | Every basket is dishwasher-safe |
| Filter holder/jug | Wash coffee oils and dry | Descaling alone cleans the jug |
| Brew group | Remove/rinse only when the manual permits | Every automatic machine has a removable group |
| Water tank/filter | Rinse tank; replace filter on its schedule | A filter eliminates descaling forever |
| Hopper/grinder | Keep dry; brush or service as directed | Water is safe inside the grinder |
| Milk tube/carafe | Disassemble and clean listed pieces | An automatic rinse sanitises every hidden surface |
How often should I descale?
There is no universal monthly rule. Use the machine prompt first, or the manufacturer interval when no prompt exists. Set water hardness correctly, follow water-filter instructions, and account for usage. A busy office machine reaches a usage-based interval faster than a lightly used home machine.
- Machine prompt: act when it requests a cycle; do not repeatedly dismiss it.
- Water hardness: test and program the machine if it provides a strip or setting.
- Water filter: install, activate and replace it as directed; filters do not make the machine maintenance-free.
- Usage: more heated water normally means minerals can accumulate sooner.
Safe descaling sequence
- Identify the exact model and read its current manual or official assistance page.
- Obtain the specified descaler and dose. Remove the water filter or other parts only if instructed.
- Empty the tray and containers, add solution as directed and place a vessel large enough for the full discharge.
- Start the model-specific descaling program and do not interrupt it.
- Complete every fresh-water rinse. Refill, reinstall or replace filters only at the instructed stage.
- Discard the first drink or rinse again only when the manual directs; never taste descaling liquid.
Vinegar, bleach and random cleaners
Use vinegar only when the exact manufacturer instructions explicitly allow it. Acidity, concentration, odour and material compatibility differ, and some brands specify their own descaler. Never use bleach, oven cleaner, abrasive powder, drain cleaner or an improvised chemical inside the machine.
Do not combine cleaning products. Keep descaler away from skin and eyes, follow its label, and run the complete rinse cycle.
UAE water: bottled and filtered do not mean scale-free
Mineral content varies among mains, filtered and bottled water. A domestic filter may change taste or some minerals without eliminating scale. Completely demineralised water can be unsuitable for taste, corrosion balance or machine sensing where the manufacturer says so. Follow the machine’s water specification rather than choosing by label alone.
Symptoms that may indicate scale or blockage
- Slower or uneven water flow, longer heating, changed temperature or reduced steam output.
- A louder pump, repeated refill/flow warnings or an overdue descale prompt.
- Changed taste or smell—although stale coffee oils, old water and milk residue can cause this too.
- Leaks from a tray, tank, seal or internal area. Scale is only one possible cause; do not keep running an electrical appliance that leaks.
These symptoms are not a diagnosis. Check seating, fill level, grind blockage and official troubleshooting. If a prescribed clean/descale does not resolve the issue, use authorised service.
Care by machine type
Capsule
Empty the used-capsule bin and tray, wipe the outlet, rinse the tank and follow the brand’s exact descaling sequence. Never force the lever or insert an incompatible capsule.
Filter
Discard grounds and paper filters, wash the jug and filter holder, remove oils from reusable filters, and descale the water path. A hotplate should be wiped only when cool and unplugged.
Manual espresso
Rinse baskets and portafilter, wipe and purge the steam wand, clean the group area, and backflush only if the machine design and manual support it. Keep water out of the grinder.
Bean-to-cup
Follow automatic rinses, empty the puck bin and tray, clean a removable brew group if fitted, maintain the grinder/hopper dry, and disassemble milk tubes or carafes on schedule.
For milk-specific routines, use the steam-wand and automatic-frother maintenance guide.
Storage and periods without use
Empty beans, grounds, capsules, water and milk as the manual directs. Clean and dry removable parts, store the machine upright in a dry place, and use any drain or frost-protection procedure specified for relocation. After storage, run the official first-use or rinse process.
When to stop and seek UAE service
- The cable, plug or socket is damaged, hot, sparking or trips protection.
- Water reaches electrical areas or an internal leak persists.
- The pump runs dry, the grinder jams, an error remains, or parts cannot be correctly reseated.
- There is burning smell, smoke, cracked pressure hardware or uncontrolled heating.
Use the manufacturer’s authorised UAE route where electrical repair, pressure components or warranty are involved. Keep the model/serial number and invoice; third-party repair can affect coverage.
Ownership and replacement consumables
Filters, descaler, cleaning tablets, milk cleaner and seals belong in the ongoing budget; include them with the coffee machine cost-per-cup guide.
If maintenance burden is changing your purchase decision, revisit how to choose a coffee maker and the format comparison.
Final recommendation
Clean food-contact and milk parts promptly, descale only by the exact prompt/manual and water setting, and stop when leaks or electrical symptoms appear. Prevention is easier than recovering a blocked milk path or interrupted scale cycle.
